Censored Launches Street Team Website and MySpace: The Censored Nation Has Begun

"An Iowa band, Censored, establishes a nationwide team of dedicated fans to help promote their upcoming US tour, CD release, and overall music career."

December 11th, 2008 - Censored has always been aware of how truly crucial their fans are to their dreams of becoming a successful band, but what they did not know was that their fans were wanting to do more than just buy their CD's and come to their shows. It was brought to attention by a committed Censored fan, Riley Hansen, that a street team would be an excellent idea to get the word out about the band and to build a community with their music.

"At first, we thought we would set up a simple web-page to allow fans to join the street team, and then add them to a mailing list. But, as the development process began, more and more ideas started popping up and we realized, 'This could be a REALLY big thing. We could actually do something with this.'," described lead vocalist, David Birchmier. "The term 'Censored Nation' was a reoccurring theme with us and our fans, so we decided to use it for the street team's branding," Birchmier explained. "Our goal is to build a community and leave a lasting impression on people with our music, and that is exactly what the Censored Nation means to us."

Within a couple of weeks of its inception, the street team was in full effect. A website (www.censorednation.com), MySpace (myspace.com/censorednationstreetteam), and mailing list including promotional packets were set up and being put to good use. Since the street team's launch in late September of 2008, it has expanded to consist of numerous street teams of locations around the Mid-west which have been signed up through the website alone, and the numbers are growing every day. There has also been hundreds members added through the individual street team MySpace pages.

The band has strategically set up a system in which the street team operates through. There is an individual street team for each location (city) and for each location there are 1-3 designated "leaders".  Every individual street team also owns their own MySpace page in which the leaders control. The leaders of the street teams also organize promotions for the band with their members. Each person interested in joining the street team can go to www.censorednation.com and sign up for the street team nearest them. If one does not exist for a location close to them, they can choose to become a leader and start their own street team.

Once someone has joined the Censored Nation, they receive updates on the band's every move, promotional packets for every show near their area, prizes, goodies, and points for each promotional task they complete that can be exchanged for free Censored merchandise. The most important quality of the street team is that everything affliated is run and controlled by the band itself; there are no third parties involved in the process.

"We wanted to make sure that we were making a direct connection with each and every one of our fans. Members join the street team to help us, and we feel that it is important to personally thank all of them," expressed guitarist, Jessie Ray Rush.

The band is also excited to test out the new street team's capabilities on their upcoming US tour with Vlad in Tears (a band from Italy) beginning in May of 2009. The team will also help promote the much anticipated release of Censored's new EP, which is expected to be released in March of 2009.

"We have already seen such drastic results since the creation of this team and couldn't be more pleased," said Rush. "We have found that word of mouth is the best promotion, and with the help of our fans, you are guaranteed to hear about us. So stay tuned as the Censored Nation is coming your way!"

Local Band Seeking Votes for National Competition

2007-12-22

Local Ottumwa band “Censored,” was selected to compete in a national competition called the BodogMUSIC Battle of the Bands. Since their selection back in September of 2007, they have advanced through the first two rounds of the competition, and are seeking online votes to move to the next round, when the cameras will really start rolling!

The BodogMUSIC Battle of the Bands is a reality TV show that will air on FUSE. The competition features some of the most talented bands from across the nation. The winner of the show is awarded a one million dollar recording contract and a chance to sign with BodogMUSIC. Censored entered the event by submitting their video online, and has since beat out over 4,500 bands, and is the only band from Iowa remaining in the competition.

“Censored is a mainstream hard rock band based out of Ottumwa, IA. We’re seeking all the support we can get!” said Matt Cowles, who plays drums for the band. The band is urging Iowa to support their music scene, and help send them onto the next round.  “We’re competing against bands from a much larger city, [Omaha, NE] but we’re still fighting hard, and have a real shot at this!” encourages David Birchmier, lead vocalist for the band. “Let’s show these larger cities exactly what Iowa is about” adds Jessie Rush, lead guitarist.

Since entering the competition “Censored” has played two shows in Omaha, NE at The Roxbury. In order for them to advance to the next round, and play in Minneapolis, Minnesota, they need people to vote online. They are urging everyone to go to www.censoredrock.com where they can vote and get all the details. Ryan Buck, the band’s bassist had this to say, “This is our shot at a one million dollar record deal, television time, and most importantly, to put Southeast Iowa on the map. Please check the band out, and if you like what we’re about, vote and ask your friends and family to do the same.”
